Yes, you can use them outdoors until you move the lights and expose the little holes where the lights were. BTW, the same thing happens when folks move those 12-volt garden lamps around on the cord. But they're only 12 volt. Ouch!

Paul, the wire harnesses used in those sets used an exceptional super-soft rubber covering that would seal over the holes from the socket contacts even if the socket had been in the same place for several years.
