I have some vintage old lights that I want to make sure I can use safely. Specifically a "ladder" of elves with mini lights. These elves are I think called Pixies on the packaging. They are 5 of them on the ladder and they have pipe cleaner bodies. These are very special to me and part of my childhood. I'd like to keep them going but some of the bulbs get alarmingly hot and even smoke.

I'm copying your question to Fred Fox, who operate an online vintage Christmas store and may have seen these. It might be nice if we could photos. Just do a "Reply all" and attach a photo or photos if you have them.
Fred's online store, if you want to drop by, is at http://www.blujay.com/item/3-Vintage-Re ... 00-4516047

I believe the lights in that set are replaceable and most likely what
has happened is the right size voltage lamps have been swapped once
burnt out with the wrong voltage which is a common thing. Are the bulbs
threaded or do they use bases where 2 wires make contacts in the
socket? You should still be able to find the 2 wire type in stores and
packages of them usually say for example, "For 10 light sets" For 20-25
light sets" and so on. I think the Elf set you have uses 10 lights?
Or, have the bulbs ever been sprayed with snow flocking as this too will
cause smoking. I would replace all the bulbs with new correct ones if
you can and that should solve your problem. Email back a pic if you can
or if I can help further.
