Post subject:  Wreath Question

A reader writes:

I'm sorry, but I just stubled across your website while researching the orgin of my great-grandmother's Christmas wreath, so I haven't had the pleasure of really looking over all you have.
I'm hoping with your knowledge, that you can help me figure out an approximate year my plastic holly wreath would have been made? It has an electric candle that hooks on it to display in a window.
My mother said she believes its between 1915-1930 but if at all possible I woukd like to narrow it down a bit more as I am a writer and I'm writing a short novel that centers around this wreath & the women it has been passed down too.
I would be forever grateful for your help!

----------Our Response---------------------

Thanks for getting in touch. If you can send a photo of the wreath, and also let me know if there is any kind of label (besides the Underwriter's laboratories' sticker) and whether the insulation on the cord is vinyl or cloth, that will be a big help. And by the way, if the leaves are molded soft plastic, it's probably post-1948, but don't let that dissuade you from writing the story, or sending it to me when you're done for the FamilyChristmasOnline.com story pages.

:-)

If the leaves look like they've been cut or stamped out of some sort of sheet material, they might be much earlier.

I'm copying this letter to Fred Fox, who runs the NoellKat site on Etsy, selling vintage Christmas decorations. Fred has forgotten more about this stuff than I'll ever know. So if you hit "reply" all and send us photos, Fred will see them to and offer his opinion, which is always worth more than mine.

Also, if it turns out the wreath is newer than you think, Fred can probably send you a photo of an early one to use for your story. Or maybe sell you one if he has it in stock. :-)

Fred's shop is at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/NoellKat He has lots more stuff than is listed, since he just moved from another online storefront to etsy.

Hope this makes sense - Paul
