Post subject:  AMICO PERMA-LITE CHILDRENS BOX

Here is a very unusual set by AMICO, set # 69P, Style: Perma-Lite, that I estimate from my research is from around 1936. It is very unusual in the fact that the box was meant to be cut up, and used as a toy. More about that shortly. When I found it in such good condition it was a real surprise to say the least. The only real issues aside from the usual edge wear, were a couple of torn inside flaps a stain on the cover, and some fraying of insulation at the sockets. A careful cleaning and reattaching the flaps, and some resoldering was all that was needed. The set does not have the correct lamps however. It uses the Perma-Lite shunted lamps which seem to be real hard to come by. These are not the same style as the XL lamps. They are cone shaped but instead of flutes, they have flat sides, I believe six? Anyway I don't have any, and I ran out of XL lamps, so it has some nice Mazda lamps instead.
Now for the box itself. The pictures just do not do it justice. The entire box is a toy. It came with a box of crayons ( which I haven't replaced yet) to color some of the cutouts with. Whoever had it must have had children as some of the cutouts have been colored. The circus animals are meant to be cut out, and used as standups, with strips from the inside flaps. The entire inside of the box is filled with nursery rhymes. All the flaps have something on them, either stories or instructions or pieces to cut out. The entire box is one piece and folds out flat as shown in the picture. This is a really neat find.

THAT is one of the most interesting light boxes I've ever seen. When I was a boy in the 1950s it was common for cereal boxes, etc., to have things to cut out. Sometimes those were the "premium," the replacement for the fragile plastic toy they sometimes included. But I never saw this on boxes that the industry liked to pretend you were going to keep and put the product back in for storage.

Hope you can find the "right" bulbs some day without having to get a second mortgage on your house or something. ;-)

Nice set, those lamps are 6 sided and 6 Volt. Amico also sold them as a 16 light Perma-Light set and in a 20 light set called Stream-O-Light.
I have one of those lamps in working condition with spotty paint loss, you can have it if you are willing to pay the shipping cost.
